Rio Tinto Coal Australia's thermal coal product is sourced from Blair Athol Mine, located 20 km north west of Clermont in Queensland's Bowen Basin.
Thermal coal, and particularly coal of Blair Athol's quality is a clean, cost effective primary energy source for generating electricity upon which all modern communities depend.
Blair Athol Mine coal has a number of attractive features which keep it in demand on the world resource market. It has low levels of potential pollutants, such as ash and sulphur. These characteristics assist customers to comply with strict environmental controls and can considerably reduce the costs of removing and disposing of ash and sulphur.
As a result of Blair Athol Mine coal's low abrasion and erosion properties, customers can expect reduced operating and maintenance costs. In addition, Blair Athol coal's low slagging and fouling indices ensure smoother boiler operation.
Coal from Blair Athol is transported a distance of 278km by Queensland Rail to the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal where it is loaded onto ships destined for the major thermal coal markets.
