Our funds

Our approach

Wherever possible, we seek community investment opportunities where we are not the only funding source but are one of a number of community and/or government bodies that contribute to a programme that benefits the community. In this way, the long-term sustainability of a programme is increased and community dependence on mining activities decreases over time.

We believe effective partnerships stem from shared goals, mutual commitment and proven outcomes.

Our community partnerships are often identified and administered through community development funds. We have eight community development funds which span our operations.

Since their inception, our community development funds in Queensland and New South Wales have contributed more than $15 million to the communities in which we operate.

Four of the community development funds are designed to support projects that provide business, education and training opportunities for the Wiri Yuwiburra, Wangan and Jagalingou and Western Kangoulu People, and the Aboriginal community of the Upper Hunter Valley. In Queensland these funds are established under land use agreements with each Traditional Owner group. Each group determines how the funds will be used in their community.

2009 activity

2009 signalled a new three year funding cycle for four of our funds. This additional commitment of $3 million over three years in each state, Queensland and New South Wales continues our long term commitment to the regions in which we operate.

Another milestone was achieved in 2009 with the increased collaboration amongst our three Aboriginal community development funds in Queensland to invest in projects which will have positive regional impacts.
