Kestrel Mine Community Development Fund
The Kestrel Mine Community Development Fund was established in 2003 to support communities in Emerald, Capella and the surrounding district to build community capacity to address development challenges and take advantage of emerging opportunities.
In late 2008 Rio Tinto announced the continuation of the fund and has committed $750,000 to distribute to eligible projects between January 2009 and December 2011.

Applications are open from 19 January 2009 to 17 February 2009 for round one of the Kestrel Aboriginal Community Development Fund and the Kestrel Mine Commnity Development Fund

In general, eligible applicants are those who:
- Have a project which contributes to one or more of the Fund's objectives
- Can demonstrate the capacity to make effective use of the funds
- Are willing and able to subject the project to performance measures that focus on outcomes
- Can work in partnership with the Fund and the business, and
- Can demonstrate the sustainability of a project, without the need for recurrent funding.
