Injuries

Lost time injuries (LTIs) include lost day injuries (injuries that result in one or more days away from work) and restricted work day injuries (injuries where an employee cannot perform all or any part of the normal shift).

The lost time injury frequency rate (LTIFR) is the number of LTIs per 200,000 hours worked. Our LTIFR for the year was 0.46 compared to 0.53 in 2007.

The all injury frequency rate (AIFR) is the number of injuries and medical treatment cases per 200,000 hours worked. In 2008 our target was an AIFR of less than 0.90, the goal being zero injuries.

Across the Rio Tinto Coal Australia business we recorded an AIFR of 0.76. The 2008 AIFR is a 20 per cent improvement on our 2007 result, with 41 lost time incidents, medical treatment cases and restricted work day cases recorded across the business, compared to 48 in 2007.

Our Queensland sites recorded an AIFR of 0.97 and a LTIFR of 0.46.
