2009 Targets

Each year Rio Tinto Coal Australia deliberately sets operational and business wide targets for various aspects of sustainable development such as safety, energy and water use and community relations. These voluntary targets align with the broader Rio Tinto Group targets, and are set because we are constantly working to improve our performance. They are also in addition to our statutory requirements.

Targets are set based on an understanding of the business operating environment, particularly forward production plans. In December 2008, Rio Tinto announced a global review of expenditure as part of plans to reduce debt. This includes a review of operational production plans.

Rio Tinto has provided details to the market in the first quarter of 2009, however the global economic climate continues to bring new challenges to all businesses. Due to this uncertainty it is not possible or appropriate for Rio Tinto Coal Australia to set sustainable development targets for 2009.
